GRAFFITI IN ATHENS
by ArtCoWo Press © 9 - 17 - 15
Graffiti in Athens, Greece has gained popularity, healed a country and given hope to the people of the ancient land. Amidst the economic turmoil of Europe, Greece has played the scapegoat for the rest of the world's economic disasters. The children remain starving all over the world and the Graffiti artists have run amok with ideas towards the apocalypse. Some of these artists remain more optimistic such as S.T.M.T.S, and Dreyk the Pirate. Others have shot straight for the jugular.
Artists such as "WD", Wild Drawing evokes end-of-world concepts in his powerful images. These urban painters and muralists are being honored at the National Helenic Museum in Chicago where an inventive exhibit was enacted to convey the message of the streets in Athens.
The work is trendy yet has a deeper meaning. It has inspired all ages around Greece and the message is hard to ignore when driving thru or spending a day in the city. Even the photography that captured the graffiti on the torn walls is extremely powerful enough for our society to understand the connotations of this sensitive and brutal art form. With a host of young, brash artists painting on the ancient walls, the streets of Athens are now a walking museum of ideological and socio-political artivism. These artists are transforming Greece into a modern street-art mecca that defies mere graffiti writing into a world less traveled.
