SOTHEBY'S:HIGHEST CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION SALE IN EUROPE
BY ArtCoWo Press © 9 - 20 - 15
S otheby's reports the highest gross sale for contemporary artworks in Europe with Francis Bacon and Warhol taking the cake. Warhol's obsession with the dollar sign symbol was the big winner and Bacon's Pope series claimed one of the highest price at hammer time.
The evening sale ended at 207 million dollars. Warhol changed the art world with his brand of factory produced paintings but it was his larger than life personality mixed with his rock and roll life style that garnered him attention in New York. His silk-screened canvases were disregarded by traditionalists but he influenced a generation leading to minimalism and beyond working along side Basquiat in the 80's.
The Auction that night seemed to be focused on Warhol and his ever-popular American dollar-sign series. Sotheby's marked the historical event as the highest total evening sale in London as contemporary works at auction continue to rake in the cash for auctioneers and private collectors who are selling off their prized pieces.
