BRUNO SURDO

AT ANN NATHAN GALLERY

BY ArtCoWo Press ©  9 - 17 - 15

Sure we have seen this type of art before but we have seen Pollack-style artists as well. Hyper-Realism is nothing new, the work doesn't have the cuteness of Neo Rauch but it reminds us of the giant traditional paintings of the past, Rubens and closer to the modernity of David. I felt the skin tones were not cheap like the case of so many would-be realists who can't get something as old as can be, painting flesh tones. These Allegorical works were very beautiful especially under those lights of Nathan's gallery.

Some of the nude works seemed redundant to me but than again I really don't favor nudity for the sake of. I enjoyed the larger works that were chalked full of people with colorful clothing and some charming accessories. The gallery was semi-busy that night, but not overwhelming. People were spread out but no one was there to greet me as I entered the lofty space.

It seems that in Chicago many of the Galleries have a stand-offish attitude trying to keep up with NY, however I found NYC to be quite friendly because they want to sell art.

It is not a favor of a gallery staff to be bunched up at their work tables, they should be on the floor greeting guests, because you never know who is going to walk in your door. That aside, I was there to see the work of Surdo, who I feel has real potential given time to keep his allegorical narratives room to grow.

I may have not understood his statement but I liked looking at the work and when it comes down to art that is usually the end result.
