Phoenix Art Museum 2016 Contemporary Forum Artists Grant Winners

9 - 4 - 2017

The 2016 Contemporary Forum Artists Grant Winners exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum. The winners, David Emitt Adams, Christine Cassano, Bryan David Griffith, Constance McBride and Mary Meyer, all display "intuitive and physical understanding of place," according to the Contemporary Forum. The Contemporary Forum is dedicated to the selection of recipients as well as a support group for the exhibition and emerging Arizona artists.

Some of the highlights of the exhibit include, David Emitt Adam's work of steel drum mounted photographs. He piled the steel drums to the sky in a sculptural display and then showcases photos on the drum heads. The drum head photographs were also placed on the wall of the museum for effect. These powerful photos display fracking machines which take on an environmental position. A conceptual masterpiece because they are not just simple photos. A work of sculpture, photography and dadaism. Constance McBride's sculptural works display an emotional figural stance as the ceramic and wax people crouch and lay in a sentient manner. These sculptures have a delicate substance to their almost living presence.

Bryan David Griffith's work displays burnt paper conceptual pieces with ashes piled on the floor. This use of making images through burning is highly unusual and reminds us of Alphonso Acosta's burned paintings. Acosta burns his paintings in the fire until he is happy with the work. The end result makes the paintings seem like encaustic wax was at play. The paints are usually discarded and the paper is all free.

The exhibition was quite fluid. All the works seemed to blend nicely and the exhibit was curated with enough space as to let the works breath. All the artists mentioned made an impact on the space and it left me with an overall sense that something big was taking place. It was definitely one of my favorite exhibits this year from New York to Paris. The exhibition will run until September 17th, 2017.
