Skin exhibit at LAMAG (LOS ANGELS MUNICIPAL GALLERY) in LA on Feb 7th, 2016, was filled to the walls with meaningful art and the people interested in this pressing topic. The concept of the show solidifies comparison to the "Black Lives Matter Movement," it also engages the public in a dialogue of how "skin" effects their lives.
I loved the exhibit because of its presence in multiple political realms as well as having a firm footing in both art discourse and contemporary art techniques. It was definitely a multifaceted exhibit which touched upon race in America and how that topic is ever-evolving and still a problem all Americans still face.
With over thirty-six artists participating, the exhibit with it's beautiful poignant work, shows the audience art can still mean something and still be abstract and visually stunning.
The exhibit connects relevance to Obama being the first black president to the fact that even though this changed history, it did not change peoples opinion in America and that racism is still a constant reminder for some people as well as it hasn't been completely erased in some parts of the country. Every artist that participated showed their take on "skin" and what it meant to them.
