Ha Chong-Hyun's recent opening reception Noveber 12th, 2016 at Blum and Poe was ethereal. The paintings, in the minimalist tradition of Agnes Martin and the boldness of the Abstract-Expressionist's, conveyed a deep serenity not current in today's contemporary market.
Ha Chong-Hyun is a celebrated Korean artist that applies the less-is-more theory but uses some element of surprise in his work. Using threaded canvases that raise the hairs when paint is applied, the end result gives the compositions depth and perspective. Some of the pieces also had chunks of color juxtaposed against flatter canvases.
Blum and Poe always know how to put on a show. They have the taste of not cramming work together, so each piece can breath. The reception transformed our dull lives for a moment to show that we can seek out beauty in today's violent world. We are raised to a new high.
There is the element of design which some critics complain about abstract artwork. However, I found the work tasteful and immersive and not just for beauties sake. This is one of the best exhibits I saw all year in 2016. Especially for the Culver City area which has reached it's peak in recent years.
It was in fact where Culver City first began all those years ago, making art stars such as Mark Grotjahn. With now a new star for Blum and Poe to display...Ha Chong-Hyun. They started the Culver City art's district and other galleries followed suit. Lets just say that dealers Blum and Poe know what they are doing and it still shows.
