Not a lot of people know that Anthony Quinn, the famous actor, was a prolific artist/sculptor that created tons of art his whole life. In between his acting gigs, he created his art at an alarming rate, amassing an amazing collection before his untimely death.
He was a first rate sculptor and his paintings lent himself to roles in which he played Gauguin. Giant sculptures that were filled with color and curves, it is surprising the world didn't take notice of the actors other skills in the field of fine art. Sculptural paintings that show a unique technique, Quinn's work is impressive.
To be honest, I never knew about Quinn's passion, for what we see in society is only what makes money for an individual, not their true self. We only know about the mainstream attributes of a person, that are blasted on a global scale. The Helenic Museum was filled with his treasures and of course, his unforgettable role as Zorba the Greek. This is embedded in the minds of every Greek, which has become a part of the culture and identity in Greece.
I spoke with the director, and she told me the items featured in the museum were just a small handful of pieces that Quinn created over the course of his lifetime.
According to what she was telling me, this was a minute amount compared to his output. What was featured in the exhibit, which seemed to me like a ton of undiscovered and evocative delights for the eyes, was just the tip of the iceberg. Anthony Quinn, you will be surely missed for your exuberance for life, love and art.
