Marisa Merz is an artist that tackles many mediums. In her exhibit at the Hammer Museum this summer entitled, "The Sky is a Great Space," she shows just how much that is. Her sculptural works that hang in the air, are quite interesting. I think overall there is something to it though I really didn't understand the message. Using the open area near the ceiling is not a bad idea at all, it is the fact that she exclaims it, that I had a problem. A similarity to this would be writing a musical composition and then calling it, I like these chords, and the melody works over those chords. It is a bit redundant. With all the problems in the world the best she came up with is just that, no social commentary.

It seemed like an artist just wasting their time, money and space. Or better yet, a sponsor wasting their time, money and space. I was not impressed. Now, the paintings, that is another subject. Those were even worse. I would venture down the hack work phrase but I am not a fan of critics using those terms. So instead I will use the words, amateur, useless and no thought process went into the making of supposed outsider attempts. I was not engaged to say the least. The Hammer Museum has a great space and I have seen many quality exhibits but on occasion they will lend their space to inexperienced drones. Marisa Merz still has some ideas worth exploring so the exhibit was not a total loss.

The metal sculptures show promise but I think she should abandon painting all together as I do not think that is her forte or will it ever be. Outsider art cannot be faked. The few quality artists in that genre have made it impossible for others to follow suit. You have it or you don't. Merz does not. The paintings also did not blend together with the sculptures. I was not a fan of the curatorial work. The space was not seamless but quite broken. The paintings just threw the whole exhibit into a dismal spiral downwards.
